Project Description
GOAL: To create a Master Site Development Plan for a community park in Hempfield Township.
EPD collaborated with H.F. Lenz Company, Design 3 Architects, and Hempfield Township to prepare a conceptual vision and detailed construction plans for the development of the 17-acre Weatherwood Community Park. Situated near US Route 30, the Park is a gathering place for Township residents to meet and socialize, recreate, and learn. Consequently, its development program contemplates a mixture of passive and active uses and activities as well as an interconnected network of trails and walkways.
The passive uses include a 3,000 square foot splash pad, sunbathing plaza, community event spaces, an adult-oriented “fireside camp”, a 3,600 square foot pavilion, a 1.5-acre nature play area complete with a universally accessible water feature for nature learning and timber climbers. The active uses consist of a fitness area, a yoga deck/lawn, a synthetic surfaced multi-sport flat field, basketball, pickleball and sand volleyball courts. Anchoring the overall park, is a 5,000 multi-purpose building which houses concessions, restrooms, family rooms, storage, and maintenance spaces and a large open-air patio that fronts on the splash pad. The multi-purpose building is centrally located to support all areas and phases of the Park. Parking is positioned at the Park’s perimeter and creates a 13-acre car-free zone.
