EPD worked with the Commonwealth of Virginia to establish a state-wide policy for comprehensive recreation planning. Virginia’s Common Wealth is a comprehensive analysis and implementation strategy to optimize the State’s outdoor recreation opportunities. The outdoor recreation study's inventory consisted of major recreation areas, demographic analysis, projected recreation uses and recommendations that served as the foundation for establishing the State’s Outdoor Recreation Commission all while enhancing quality of life throughout the Commonwealth.
The study’s analysis process created the involvement of government leaders and citizens and recommended strategies that have led to the development and support of State legislation for a statewide recreation system. The successful implementation of the State's recreation visions and services are implemented by a permanent commission which is empowered to analyze demand for recreation facilities and coordinate state, local and federal efforts.
