St. George Island is a 28 mile long strip of dunes, pine-palmetto cover and marsh-land between the Gulf of Mexico and Apalachicola Bay. EPD prepared the Master Plan for St. George Island when it was one of the last major barrier islands in the State of Florida uncommitted for development or acquired as part of the public domain in the interest of conservation. The Plan was prepared in the light of three guiding objectives:
To preserve the bay, the Gulf of Mexico and all shoreline;
To protect the estuarine eco-system against pollution in any form;
To plan the St. George Island property as a laboratory and working model of the best that can be achieved in coastal land development.
